A week before the conclusion of a departmental inquiry into the Government Industrial School (GIS), two female wards have been charged by police with assaulting a staff member.

A 16-year-old girl and a 13-year-girl, both wards of the Barrows, St Lucy institution, are due to appear before a Magistrate today.

The assault allegedly occurred last Saturday at Barrows, when pandemonium broke out at the school again and a craft teacher was injured. Sources said police from District “E” Station had to be summoned.

When contacted yesterday, Dr Marsha Hinds of Operation Safe Space confirmed that her team would be providing one of the girls with legal representation.

The other girl is said to be a ward of the Child Care Board. (MB)
