The chairman of the Barbados Medical Council admitted that while doctors can open surgical facilities without the authority of the Barbados Medical Council, the Ministry of Health still has the last say.
However, consultant surgeon Mr Selwyn Ferdinand is of the opinion there should be criteria established to govern the opening of operating theatres outside the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH).
He made the comments, in answer to questions from Sir Elliott Mottley QC yesterday, as he testified in the Coroner’s Inquest into Warren Mottley’s death.
Ferdinand explained the council was the regulatory authority looking after the functioning of doctors on the island. The field was governed by the Medical Professions Act, he added. (HLE)
