There are plans to outfit as many schools as possible with murals under the Schools’ Beautification Programme.

Minister of education Kay McConney shared the idea during the unveiling of the Blazing Trails mural yesterday at Graydon Sealy Secondary School, Paddock Road, St Michael.

The mural, painted by artists Kwami Hunte, Nikolai Charles, Sheri Nicholls and Don Small, depicts former headmasters Graydon Sealy and Matthew Farley, entertainer Ricky Lil Rick Reid, calypsonian Christina Chrissy D Dottin, and former West Indian all-rounder Dwayne Smith.

McConney said over the last three years they had overseen the installation of murals at six schools – Grantley Adams Memorial; Frederick Smith Secondary; The Ann Hill School; St Mary’s Primary; Graydon Sealy and one yet to be unveiled at a primary school in Christ Church.

“The aim is that across all of our schools that we will have the same kind of representation of the arts where we see it come alive. We have moved to beautify our schools with works of art designed and painted by our own local artists. It speaks of a continued commitment of the Ministry of Education, Technological and Vocational Training, to showcasing our local artistic talent, and our commitment to leverage the importance of the art to national development,” she said.
