The Bajan Gems netballers played their best game of the Commonwealth Games but ended the Group action winless by falling to 8th-ranked Wales 44-60 yesterday in Birmingham.

Co-captain Latonia Blackman, who along with fellow leader Shonette Azore-Bruce, wing attack Brianna Holder and goal defender Akeena Stoute played all 60 minutes of the match shot a perfect 19 goals at goal attack.

Goal shooter Shonica Wharton scored 21/27 before leaving six minutes before the end after taking a tumble.

Coach Margaret Cutting started with Azore-Bruce and Stoute defending, Blackman and Wharton shooting, Samantha Browne at wing defence, Holder at wing attack and Tonisha Rock-Yaw running the centre.

In spite of stuttering in midcourt once again, the Gems proved competitive in scoring double figures in every quarter for the first time in the Games. (KB)
