In celebration of World Food Day on October 16, the Lions Club of St Michael served breakfast to students of the Hindsbury Primary School on Monday morning.

Nickolas Dacosta, district governor of the Lions and Leo Clubs in the Caribbean, said it was their way of ensuring each student had a healthy meal and would be able to properly understand the lessons in their classrooms.

“We know children who come to school have a full packed day of learning and activities but most children will come without the necessary nutritious meals and you cannot engage a child in learning without them being actually fed.”

He said during his tour of the Caribbean to see the progress of his ward he was happy to see these types of initiatives undertaken by the Lions Club of St Michael

President of the Lions Club of St Michael, Beverley Piggott, announced in October, there would be other activities for children that would encourage them to be healthy.

“We’re going to have a lecture where we will talk to them about how they can help with their diabetes, how they can control the different things that they should eat and different things that they can do. And most of all, we will try to get them into an exercise program so they can keep their bodies in good shape,” Piggott said.

She added there would be a 5k walk in collaboration with the Diabetes and Hypertension Association of Barbados and the Breastfeeding and Child Nutrition Foundation of Barbados on November 13, to raise awareness about Diabetes in light of World Diabetes Day on November 14.

The walk will begin at Young Men’s Progressive Club’s headquarters in Beckles Road, St Michael and will proceed through Bridgetown including Collymore Rock, Belleville, Crumpton Street and Lower Bay Street before returning to the club’s home grounds.

There will be a workout session with one of the island’s popular instructors, Amory “Spinny” Holder after the walk. (RT)
