West Indian fast bowler Kemar Roach is returning to County Champions Surrey Cricket Club for a third season and will be available for the first six games of the 2023 LV=Insurance County Championship season which starts on April 6.

During his time at Surrey Roach has taken 47 wickets over two seasons at an average of 23.6, including career best first class figures of eight for 40 against Hampshire Cricket Club.

The Barbadian was instrumental in last season’s title win, taking 25 wickets in seven matches. His crowning moment was a second innings five-wicket haul against then holders Warwickshire at The Kia Oval to set up victory on day four.

When asked about rejoining the club Roach said “I really enjoy playing for Surrey and winning the title last year was incredible to be a part of. It’s such a talented and exciting group of players and I can’t wait to get back out on the pitch representing the Club.”

Head coach at Surrey Gareth Barry said: “We’re looking forward to welcoming Kemar back to Surrey. He brings great ability and work ethic, and his experience plays an important role in the dressing room.

“Kemar has already shown what he can do in his time at the Club so far and we’re excited to have him joining us again this year.”

Roach will join the squad prior to the first fixture of the season which is away to Lancashire at the Emirates Old Trafford. His first game before The Kia Oval crowd will be against Hampshire from the April 13 to 16.

He will also be available for the trips to Edgbaston to play against Warwickshire and Chelmsford to play Essex, both of which have won the Championship in recent years. His spell will conclude with two home derbies against Middlesex from May 11 to 14 and Kent from May 18 to 21.

Barring injury, Roach will likely be a part of West Indies’ test tour of Zimbabwe next month. The first Test takes place on February 4 at the Queen’s Sports Club, Bulawayo. His last match for the Windies was the 164-run loss to Australia at Perth where he limped off with a thigh injury.  (JC)
