Only one murder case ready

Where are the murder cases for trial?

That’s what an upset High Court judge, Justice Carlisle Greaves, wanted to know yesterday as he held his court’s arraignment day at the start of the new Sessions.

“What message are we sending out there to these people? ‘Don’t worry, them ain’t gine try you’?” he asked.

“And people are suing us left, right and centre for delay in their matters. We are getting state orders left, right and centre. I want the public to understand it is not the courts’ fault. We want to work. Let the fault go wherever it belongs.”

He had noted that unless the backlog of murder cases is reduced, the island could find itself “like our neighbours to the north and our neighbours to the south” who have imposed states of emergency. (HLE)
