Maria St Auburn-Cave turned 100 years old yesterday, becoming one of Barbados’ latest centenarians.

Surrounded by her seven children and a few of her grandchildren at her St George home, the 100-year-old said she was happy to have reached the milestone, but it was bittersweet without late husband Prince Cave Sr.

“I feel good, very happy to see everybody. I had a good husband, I have seven beautiful children and I got about 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grands. I had a beautiful life and a good loving husband,” she said.

“I feel real happy. The only thing is that I feel sad that my husband is not here but God took him and I have to live without him. He was a good husband and a good father. He worked day and night to provide for us. We never suffered a day. Everything was good. He’s gone and I have to live without him but I love him,” she said.

Cave said she hoped to live more years alongside her family.

Eldest daughter Grace Lewis described her as a selfless mother.

“She was a wonderful mother and loving and she always put us first. I remember as girls growing up, she would take us to basketball and table tennis and sports, especially when we started to get a little older. She felt that we needed her company instead of going alone,” she said.

Another daughter, Janice Wilson said her mother was always supportive.

“Mummy was always there for us and she supported me in everything. I used to play netball for Barbados so she was my biggest support. She used to come and watch me play,” she said. (RT)
