Call to fund seismic research

Regional governments have been chided for not following through on their commitments to provide funding for seismic research in the Caribbean.

Professor of Geology with the Seismic Research Centre, The University of the West Indies (UWI) Richard Robertson said too many were late with support or did not provide any help at all.

Speaking during a panel discussion entitled DRRC Conversations hosted by the Disaster Risk Reduction Centre (DRRC) on UWI TV, Robertson said this persisted in spite of the La Soufriere example.

“We are still to a large extent in the state where the governments who committed to contributing a certain amount are not doing it and therefore it means the director of Seismic constantly has to find ways of working a budget that is insufficient in the first place and it’s even worse that the contributions are not coming when they should or not coming sufficiently. It’s ridiculous, frankly,” Robertson added. (Nation News)
