Elite Barbadian triathlete Matthew Wright continued his superb start to the 2023 season with victory in the 2023 Africa Triathlon Cup in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt.

Fresh off the heels of a third-place finish at the Morocco edition 2023 African Triathlon Cup in the city of M’Diq, Wright returned to Africa less than a week later to win the following edition of the 2023 Africa Triathlon Cup held last Thursday and Friday in the Egyptian coastal city.

In M’Diq, the Olympic distance course of a 1500 metres swim, 40 kilometre, and 10-K run was a tough test as hometown favourite and world-ranked number 16 Jawad Abdoumola, along with many of the world’s top 100 ranked athletes, comprised the 55-man pool.

Wright, who celebrated his 30th birthday two weeks ago, started the swim well to emerge from the choppy Mediterranean Sea in third position where he, along with approximately 20 athletes, formed the lead group onto the bike course which included pre-race favourite Abdoumoula and WTCS Hamburg winner Tim Hellwig of Germany.Ā  (NM)
