Rape is a “humiliating, degrading and brutal invasion” of the privacy of the victim, a High Court judge said yesterday.

“Rape is perhaps the most horrific and dehumanising violation that a person can live through and is a crime that not only violates the mind and body of a complainant, but causes suffering to the soul.

“It is an offence which destroys the moral and social fabric of our communities and is mainly committed against women in our societies,” declared Justice Pamela Beckles as she dealt with rapist Wayne Ricardo Watts in the No. 5 Supreme Court.

However, because of the age of the matter and after the complainant had said she would rather have compensation, Watts was ordered to pay $10 000 compensation or risk four years in jail in default. (HLE)
