Farm project for students with disabilities

More individuals with disabilities have been equipped with skills to raise animals, reap crops and become less food insecure.

Students from the Chanellor School, Ann Hill School and Derrick Smith School and Vocational Centre participated in the project which began in November 2022.

Technical specialist at Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) Dr Roxanne Waithe summed it up last Friday following the closure of their Farmable Livelihoods Project for Persons with Disabilities.

“We realised from the onset that persons with disabilities were often excluded from projects like this. However, the fact that they have disabilities does not mean that they are not capable of farming and engaging in agriculture, so we wanted them to get basic skills in specific forms of agriculture,” Waithe said.

She made those comments at Challenor Creative Arts and Training Centre, Canefield Road, St Thomas. (TG)
