Sanitation Service Authority staff in Wildey, St Michael, staged a brief work stoppage yesterday morning.

A meeting between the workers, union officials and management brought an end to the protest action over the non-renewal of a job hand contract and the posting of an internal advertisement for a position in which an employee had been acting.

Caswell Franklyn, general secretary of Unity Workers’ Union which represents some of the workers, said it was their effort that got the matter resolved.

SSA public relations officer Carl Padmore said the issues were discussed at a meeting and resolved.

Franklyn said a female employee had acted about 20 times in the advertised position since 2018 and it was not the SSA’s culture to advertise such positions but to promote internally from the best-suited workers.

He said while he did not initiate the action, he informed the workers he would support whatever protest they took. (AC)
