Barbados men took the scenic route into tomorrow’s semifinals of the 18th CAZOVA volleyball championships being contested in the Anthony Nesty Sports Hall in the Surinamese capital, yesterday morning.

Playing Martinique in a rescheduled match the Bajans dropped the opening set to their opponents before taking the match 25-27, 25-18, 25-12, 25-15. That win saw Barbados topping Group A unbeaten and taking the direct ticket into the semis.

On Tuesday night the defending champions and hosts Suriname squeezed past Martinique in five sets.

Barbados played a sluggish opening set but still advanced to set points 24-22 and 25-24 before an uncharacteristic hitting error by Ahkeem Mayers handed the French team set point, 26-25.  Captain Akeel Oxley shockingly hit the next ball long for Martinique to take the advantage. (KB)
