From October 1, Barbadians over the age of 65 years old will be able to ride any bus operated by the Transport Board for free with a simple  “tap and go”.

The “cashless system” which is about to be launched by the Transport Board for commuters who travel on its buses will begin with people 65 years and older once they have pinned their Trident ID cards. All they would need to do is “tap” on the card reader as they enter a bus.

This new initiative, which seeks to make travel on public transport hassle-free for senior citizens, is the first to be facilitated by the Ministry of Industry, Innovation, Science & Technology and the Electoral and Boundaries Commission (EBC) in the roll-out of services and benefits of the Trident ID card.

However, the seniors who did not activate the chip and pin technology in the card when they collected it will now be required to “pin” their cards. The EBC will accommodate those individuals by allowing the pinning of cards at its office daily in Warrens Tower 2 from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m.

The EBC will also set up the following pinning stations from September 25 to December 29 between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. at:

  • Granville Williams Bus Terminal at Fairchild Street, Bridgetown
  • Princess Alice Bus Terminal, Princess Alice Highway
  • Speightstown Bus Terminal, Speightstown
  • Weymouth Bus Terminal, Roebuck Street, St Michael

Pinning stations will also be set up at post offices from September 25 to October 27 Monday and Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. (PR/JC)
