GAIA eyeing Concorde space

Management of Grantley Adams International Airport (GAIA) plans to find a new use for the closed Concorde Experience as it struggles to deal with the huge influx of passengers passing through as part of the homeporting initiative.

Chief executive officer (CEO) Hadley Bourne said yesterday it was a challenge to handle the thousands of people arriving to board cruise ships as well as those departing them looking to fly home.

“In addition to our normal commercial passengers, we now have those who are doing the air-to-sea cruises and this season, especially on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays, we are seeing an increase through the airport,” he said.

“You have a cruise ship that is probably taking 4 000 to 5 000 passengers – that is seven or eight wide bodies (mid- to long-haul planes) alone and you have to be able to handle those. . . (CA)
