Lady Tridents hit for seven

The Barbados senior women’s national football team were taught another serious football lesson by the Dominican Republic (DR) as they fell to a 7-1 home defeat on Friday night in their penultimate group stage game of the 2024 Concacaf W Gold Cup Qualifiers at the Wildey Turf.

Chasing top spot in the group, the Dominican Republic were ruthless in their attacking intent and it paid off, especially for captain Lucia Marte and Mia Asenjo, who both bagged braces, as well as Alyssa Oviedo, Kathryn Gonzales and Winibian Peralta, who contributed solitary strikes.

Acacia Small’s 32nd minute goal was a much-welcomed equaliser for the hosts, but their joy was short lived as Asenjo put the visitors back into the lead a minute later.

It was a thorough second half performance from the visitors as they put five past goalkeeper Rhea Holder, including the cherry on top, an inch-perfect 87th minute free kick from Marte to conclude the contest. (NM)
