A BARBADIAN SURGEON has been joined by colleagues in appealing for a national annual screening test for colon cancer to reduce the increasing number of deaths from the disease.
Dr Sahle Griffith was supported by other doctors and advocates on Saturday when Cancer Support Services held a public discussion at the Parkinson Community Centre in The Pine, St Michael.
“I say that we must look at a national screening programme,” Griffith told the audience, adding that colon cancer was preventable.
Members of the audience noted the cost of colon cancer surgery could be between $4 000 and $5 000 which might be prohibitive to some people. (HH)

It’s about time. My nephew was told he was too young to be tested.
Even-though his dad died with the disease.
My nephew subsequently got colon cancer and died just like his father.
His two brothers my nephews, have not be able to get the test the last time I spoke with them.
I am hoping they too don’t end up dying like their big brother and father.
When my brother got diagnosed with the disease, and since his passing.
I’ve had two tests done five years apart. My doctors insisted I get tested every five years.
The ending of this year is when I am due for my third colon test since my brother was diagnosed.
A lot of talk about saving lives I’ve noticed; but very little has been done to prevent deaths.
Hopefully changes will come to prevent death from this horrific disease.
