General secretary of the Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU) Toni Moore says there has been a resurgence of confidence in the country’s oldest trade union.

Moore, who was speaking to the media following a walk-through of the National Botanical Gardens, the site of the BWU’s Labour Day celebrations set for May 1, explained that a recent spate of successful industrial relations negotiations had resulted in an uptick in membership.

Without divulging the numbers, she said the increase had led to the consolidation and establishment of several divisions within the union. These bolstered divisions placed the BWU in a better bargaining position within the industrial relations landscape, she added.

What we are extremely pleased about is the age of the new members coming in. We are getting a lot of young members coming in and that shows a resurgence and a rebirth within the Barbados Workers’ Union. Since we have streamlined the process and we have online sign-up and payments, we are starting to see a lot of people who may be a little bit worried about employers seeing them joining a union, coming in,” she said. (CLM)
