A hurricane warning remains in effect for Barbados as Hurricane Beryl intensifies, expected to become a major hurricane by late Sunday night.
The storm’s centre is projected to pass 55 miles (88 km) south of the island, bringing hurricane-force winds and heavy rainfall.
As of 8 p.m. on today, Hurricane Beryl was located about 660 miles (1060 km) east-southeast of Barbados, with maximum sustained winds of 80 mph (130 km/h) and moving west at 22 mph (35 km/h). Hurricane-force winds extend 10 miles from the centre, with tropical storm-force winds reaching 60 miles.
Residents should prepare for possible flash flooding and severe thunderstorms, which may lead to power outages and service disruptions.
Hazardous marine conditions are also expected, with a small craft and high surf warning in effect due to above-normal sea swells.
The public is encouraged to follow updates from the Department of Emergency Management and local media, with the next update scheduled for 11 p.m tonight.
