Chicken thieves are causing some poultry farmers thousands of dollars in losses, in the midst of an industry hit by shortages.
One farmer, who spoke to the Saturday Sun on condition of anonymity, said over the course of three nights he lost about 400 birds. Another farmer was also reportedly targeted by the same group of men.
He said his chickens were exactly six weeks old, the age they go to market.
“I supply a lot of people that sell food on the road. I really ain’t got nothing to give them at all,” he cried.
“I do like 800 every three weeks. I ain’t got nothing to give them and I have to wait until the next batch ready. I have to keep an eye on that because I don’t know if they will come back for this next batch.”
The farmer estimated his losses to be in the region of $10 000, which included malicious damage. The other farmer said his losses were between $3 000 and $5 000.
Barbados Agricultural Society (BAS) chief executive officer James Paul raised the alarm of this latest setback in the industry and called it an “unacceptable crime”.
