Psychiatrist: Children mirror actions of negative role models

Children often mimic their parents’ behaviours.

Adults, therefore, must do a better job of being positive role models, says Senior Registrar at the Psychiatric Hospital, Dr Ronald Chase.

“We see the rise in crime and we see the rise in violence in our schools amongst our schoolchildren. Children model the adults in their head, so when you want to chastise a child, remember where the child sees the behaviour,” he said.

The psychiatrist made those comments while speaking during the launch of criminologist Kim Ramsay’s latest book Evil Lurks Among Us at the Barbados Museum and Historical Society on Saturday evening.
