Barbados Women clinch 11-run victory over Guyana in Super50 opener

Barbados Women began their 2025 CG United Women’s Super 50 campaign on Monday with a narrow 11 run win over Guyana Women at the Conaree Sports Club in St Kitts & Nevis..

After winning the toss and batting first, Barbados posted 185-5 thanks to fifties from captain Asabi Alleyne and experienced batter Kyshona Knight who made 57* and 54 respectively.

In reply, Guyana battled up to 172 all out right before the game threatened to go down to the death.

Without the services of key players Hayley Matthews and Deandra Dottin who are currently playing in the Women’s Premier League for Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Giants respectively, Barbados replaced their run scoring in the aggregate. Top order player Trishan Holder batted steadily for 27 runs from 62 deliveries after coming to the crease with the score on just 10 for the fall of Kycia Knight for nought. Naijanni Cumberbatch scored 21 before her wicket brought Alleyne to the crease whose brisk half century from 55 balls.

Her partnership with Kyshona which was worth 78 runs eventually led Barbados to a par score.

Guyana’s start proved to be less inauspicious with the openers putting on 26 before Katana Mentore fell for just 4 runs. Her partner Mandy Mangru (26), captain Shermaine Campbelle (25), Shabika Gajnabi (26) and Cherry-Ann Fraser (26) all made starts but were outscored by the 27 extras as Barbadian fast bowlers were equally wayward. Spinners Erin Deane and Keila Elliot proved to be match winners with the ball as they took three wickets apiece to give Barbados a successful start to the competition.

In the other matches to be played yesterday, Jamaica Women beat Trinidad Women by 51 runs and Windward Islands Women beat Leeward Islands women by 8 wickets with 217 balls remaining.

Summarised Scores
Barbados Women 185-5 (Asabi Alleyne 57*, Kyshona Knight 54; Sheneta Grimmond 2-17)

Guyana Women 172 all out (Erin Deane 3-33, Keila Elliot 3-38; Mandy Mangru 26, Cherry-Ann Fraser 26)
