Paul knocks milk imports

BICO’S ANNOUNCEMENT THAT they have returned to the milk production business has left a bad taste in the mouth of chief executive officer at the Barbados Agricultural Society (BAS), James Paul.

He does not support Bico’s importation of powdered milk. In his view, it increases food dependency.

“I believe it is a bit disingenuous to give an impression to the public that the milk that is being produced by Bico, which is made from milk powder, is the same milk that is being sold by Pine Hill Dairy. It is simply not true.

“I and the farmers support Pine Hill Dairy from the point of view that it seeks to utilise a raw material that is produced in Barbados to be further processed. Bico does not utilise raw milk from Barbados,” Paul said He made those comments during a post- Agrofest

press conference at Queen’s Park, in The City yesterday.

During the briefing, he referenced an article in which executive chairman at Bico Limited, Edwin Thirlwell, explained why they returned to the milk production space.

In yesterday’s BUSINESS AUTHORITY Thirwell said due to the ongoing milk shortage, they felt it was necessary to fill the gap.
