Today, on International Nurses Day 2025, the Barbados Nurses Association (BNA) joins the global nursing community in celebrating the invaluable contributions of nurses. This year’s theme, “Our Nurses, Our Future: Caring for Nurses Strengthens Economies,” as set forth by the International Council of Nurses (ICN), underscores the undeniable link between nurse well-being and the stability of healthcare systems and economies worldwide.
As we reflect on the challenges facing nurses, we recognize that investing in their health and well-being is not just a moral imperative—it is an economic necessity. The ICN’s 2025 report highlights the urgent need for safer work environments, mental health support, and policies that protect nurses from burnout and attrition. A strong, resilient nursing workforce leads to higher patient safety, improved healthcare outcomes, and economic growth.
Here in Barbados, nurses continue to serve with unwavering dedication, often in demanding conditions. The BNA remains committed to its mandate of advocacy and representation, ensuring that nurses receive the support, protection, and recognition they deserve. We echo the ICN’s Charter for Change, calling on policymakers, healthcare leaders, and society to value, respect, and invest in nurses for a sustainable future.
On this International Nurses Day, BNA reaffirms its commitment to strengthening the nursing profession through education, advocacy, and workplace reforms. We urge all stakeholders to take meaningful action—from improving working conditions to ensuring fair compensation and mental health resources.
To every nurse in Barbados and beyond—your work is vital, your dedication is seen, and your impact is immeasurable. May this day serve as a reminder that caring for nurses is caring for the future of healthcare and the economic growth of Barbados.
Happy International Nurses Day!
