Hayley Matthews had extra motivation when she went in to bat for West Indies Women against England Women in the first T20 International on Wednesday afternoon.

The captain wanted to win the match first for her team, but she also wanted to do something extra-special for her grandmother. In the end, Matthews scored a sensational century, but unfortunately did not get the win.

However, it was a magical tribute as Hayley dedicated the performance to Lauretta Matthews, who passed away recently in Barbados. According to Hayley, while there were no tears on the field, she could feel the presence of the family’s beloved matriarch while she was at the crease.

“She was always there at every stage in our lives. We loved her dearly and she loved it. I want to take the opportunity to dedicate the hundred to my grandmother. This is the first international match I’ve played since she passed away a few weeks ago so it was very special that I was able to go there and get a big one,” Hayley said. (PS)
