The skin condition affecting some patients of the Geriatric Hospital has officially been diagnosed as scabies.

During a media briefing yesterday at the Pan American Health Organisation in Dayrells Road, St Michael, Chief Medical Officer, The Most Honourable Dr Kenneth George, said the nine infected patients at the Beckles Road, St Michael facility were suffering from “partially treated scabies”, which was caused by mites.

“We have been looking at some unusual skin conditions that occurred at the Geriatric Hospital over the last two weeks. We needed to have some expert opinions on the determination of what is the rash, because that’s the correct way to do it, [though] we did have some difficulty in securing the appropriate dermatologist [which] took a few days as well.

“Fortunately, we had a team that visited yesterday (Monday) and they have determined the diagnosis of the patients they had seen as partially-treated scabies,” he explained.
