Rico Kemar Clarke, 35, of Merricks, St Philip, had denied the charge when his trial began in February, but by the end of it, a jury found him guilty of causing Henderson Greenidge’s death on January 5, 2018, along Foursquare Road, also in St Philip, by driving at a speed or in a manner dangerous to the public.
When he returned to Supreme Court No. 3A on Monday for sentencing, Justice Anthony Blackman ordered Clarke to pay $12 000 in six months or spend 1 622 days (four years, 44 days) in jail.
After considering the aggravating and mitigating factors, the judge arrived at a starting point of 2 920 days (eight years) in prison. He found the major factors to be that a life was lost and the offence was a serious one. On the other hand, he added, no other serious damage or injuries resulted from the accident. (SD)
