The movement towards 50-50 representation of women and men in the news has plateaued, according to results from the 2025 Global Media Monitoring Project (GMMP).
Global coordinator of GMMP 2025 Rodrigo Molina shared the findings during the virtual launch of the media project via Zoom on Thursday where other media professionals gave insight into some of the issues.
He noted a modest improvement in women’s representation in the news, with their presence increasing just by one per cent from 2020 to 2025, rising to 26 per cent. He also pointed out that women continue to appear slightly more in Internet news platforms compared to traditional media, a tendency that has remained since 2015.
To illustrate the changes of women’s presence across print, television and radio, Molina referenced the data which showed Africa women’s presence increased by one per cent between 2020 and 2025, matching the overall one per cent rise since 1995. In Asia, from 2020 to 2025, there was a decrease of two per cent. However, compared to 1995, the increase has been five per cent.
