Barbados celebrated its National Day at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, yesterday with a vibrant display of music, dance, and cultural pride, capped by remarks from Minister of Economic Affairs Kay McConney, who represented the Government at the international event and Japan’s State Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, Masaki Ogushi.

The celebrations formed part of the activities at the Barbados Pavilion, themed Barbados is Life: Empowering Our People, Transforming the World.

McConney and Ogushi both spoke about the success to date of the Expo and how the theme encapsulates three sub-themes: Saving Lives, Empowering Lives, and Connecting Lives, which guide global dialogue and initiatives aimed at solving global issues and building a sustainable future and also of the longstanding, strong diplomatic relationship between the two countries, which dates back to 1967; and how

they both wish to deepen their bilateral relationship to the benefit of their citizens.

The day’s programme also connected to the Pavilion’s broader goals of promoting Barbados as a destination for investment, tourism, and cultural exchange.

Barbados Expo Band and performers Edwin Yearwood, Nikita Browne and Casheda Dottin captivated audiences with music that reflected the island’s African and Caribbean roots, drawing enthusiastic responses from both Japanese visitors and the Barbadian diaspora present who had flags raised.

The Barbados Pavilion will remain open until October 13, featuring rotating exhibitions and events designed to immerse visitors in the island’s culture and opportunities. (NS/BGIS)
