Bodybuilding legend Albert Beckles dies

The local bodybuilding fraternity is in mourning following the passing of one of this island’s best.

Albert Beckles, an icon of the sporting a a household name in the 1970s and 1980s when he was among the top performers around the world, passed away on Saturday.

The legendary Barbadian also represented Great Britain. RxMuscle announced the news of his passing on Saturday, May 16.

Beckles was born on July 14, 1930, in Barbados, and later moved to London and slowly became a well-known figure in the British bodybuilding scene.

He was known for having one of the best physiques throughout the 1970s and 1980s. His symmetry, aesthetics, and unmatched conditioning set him apart from other bodybuilders in his class.

He made his Olympia debut in 1977, and in 13 appearances, he had six top-five finishes. His best results include placing third in 1975, fifth in 1982, fourth in 1984, second in 1985, and fourth again in 1986. During the 1985 appearance, he finished second to Lee Haney at the age of 55. (PS)
