Commissioner Boyce outlines vision for the Barbados Police Service

Newly installed Commissioner of Police Sonia Boyce has outlined her vision for a modern, community-centred police service during her first official address to members of The Barbados Police Service.

Speaking at a general staff meeting at Police Headquarters today, Boyce said her vision was for a “modern, trusted, community-centred and intelligence-led organisation” that earns and sustains public confidence while delivering high standards of professionalism.

“I assumed office with deep humility, a clear sense of responsibility, and great confidence” in the men and women who serve Barbados every day, she said.

The meeting also saw the announcement of two acting Assistant Commissioners of Police. Christine Standford was appointed acting Assistant Commissioner in charge of Special Operations, while Vernon Farrell was appointed acting Assistant Commissioner in charge of Crime.

Boyce identified the Service’s priorities as strengthening public trust, preventing and detecting crime, reducing fear, protecting life and property, increasing meaningful police visibility and engagement, supporting the wellbeing and development of members, modernising policing systems and technology, and deepening partnerships with communities.

She reaffirmed her commitment to the Service’s “Community Focused, Service Driven” philosophy, saying it remained the right approach for the organisation and the people it serves.

Over the next six months, the Commissioner said she would meet with officers at every level through station visits, town hall meetings, focus groups and virtual sessions to help shape the Service’s future direction.

She also pledged to keep officers informed throughout the transformation process.

“I look forward to meeting many of you in the days and weeks ahead,” Boyce said.

She thanked officers and their families for their dedication and professionalism, calling for their continued support as The Barbados Police Service moves forward
