Call to repurpose Andrews

St Joseph residents are calling for something to be done with the abandoned Andrews Sugar Factory, whether it be turning it into a farmers’ market, museum or major enterprise like the repurposed Haymans Factory in St Peter.

And Member of Parliament for St Joseph, Ryan Brathwaite, has given the idea his full support after the Parish Independence Committee recently staged a successful event there.

Brathwaite said residents had approached him about starting with something as small as a farmers’ market, but he was thinking much bigger.

“. . . . On a broader view, I’d like it to be turned into some kind of museum as well because the sugar industry is the bedrock of the Barbados we know today and Andrews is central to that idea,” he told the Sunday Sun in a recent telephone interview.
