The Ministry of Health and Wellness wishes to advise the public that emergency services are responding to a fire at the metal dump in Hoytes Village, St. James.
Communities in the immediate surrounding areas are most likely to be affected by smoke from the fire.
Persons with asthma or other pre-existing respiratory conditions who are affected by the smoke are advised to avoid the area, where possible, or to remain indoors with windows and doors closed until conditions improve.
Persons who are experiencing difficulty breathing, chest discomfort, dizziness, nausea, or other symptoms as a result of smoke exposure are advised to seek immediate medical attention at a healthcare facility.
Emergency responders are taking all necessary measures to bring the fire under control and to minimise potential risks to public health.
The Ministry will continue to monitor the situation and provide further updates as necessary (MHW).
