Credit unions and financial cooperatives around the globe will today be celebrating International Credit Union Day, a day which champions the cooperative financial model and commemorates the credit union’s impact and achievements.
This modern, globally recognised International Credit Union Day began in 1948, and is usually celebrated on the third Thursday in October.
The global observance is said to highlight the member-centric approach of credit unions.
Being held this year under the theme, Cooperative Finance: A Steady Signal in a Noisy World, the day will be marked around the globe with some credit unions hosting member appreciation days with giveaways, and various community outreach initiatives aimed at educating members and prospective members on financial education.
In this eight-page feature, we take a look at the credit union movement both near and far, and track its growth over the years.
