BCFA calls for support for Cuba at UN

The Barbados Cuba Friendship Association (BCFA) has called on Caribbean nations to support Cuba’s resolution against the United States’ economic embargo when it comes before the United Nations General Assembly this week.

In a statement issued on Sunday, BCFA president David Denny declared the association’s support for the resolution, which calls for an end to the US economic, commercial and financial embargo against Cuba.

The association condemned the decades-long embargo and urged all UN member states to vote in favour of the resolution.

Denny made a special appeal to CARICOM and other Caribbean nations, citing Cuba’s contributions to the region through medical personnel, education, scholarships and assistance during hurricanes and the COVID-19 pandemic.

The association also warned Caribbean governments against abstaining or voting against the resolution, saying any failure to support Cuba would betray the region’s history and longstanding friendship with the island.

The statement described Cuba’s achievements in health, education, science and culture as an inspiration to Barbados and the wider Caribbean, and called for an overwhelming vote in favour of the resolution.
