Kraigg Brathwaite, the Barbados and West Indies captain, has taken a major step and moved into the board room. He is the new president of the Wanderers Club. The 34-year-old opening batsman who completed 100 Test match appearances for the West Indies last year, was elected at the club’s annual general meeting at Dayrell’s Road on Tuesday night.
He takes over from Richard “Prof” Edwards, the former Barbados and West Indies fast bowler, who stepped down after being in the position for close to two decades. Stephen Farmer, an attorney and former Wanderers captain and Barbados allrounder was expected as vice president at the club’s 149th annual general meeting. The club will celebrate its 150th anniversary next year.
Brathwaite is still an active player and has played in all formats this season. He spoke to NATIONNEWS and said he was “honored” to take up the prestigious post at one of the island’s oldest and most respected sporting institutions.
“It is an honor to be named as president of Wanderers and I thank the members for the confidence they have placed in me to lead the club. I want to thank Richard ‘Prof’ Edwards for his leadership and all that he has done for the club over the years. He is a stalwart at the club and an example for all of us to follow. He is respected all across cricket in Barbados and as I take over from him and vow to carry on the good work,” Brathwaite said.
“I have been at Wanderers since I was a boy in the junior programme. This is where I learned the game and the club has done a lot for me as a player and as a person. I have a duty to give back, to share the knowledge I have earned from playing and traveling around the world … and that is what I want to do. I want to give back … to help and to see the club flourish and prosper.” (PS)
