QEH treating most critically ill patients since COVID-19 pandemic

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) is caring for more critically ill patients than at any time since the COVID-19 pandemic, as an increase in severe respiratory illnesses puts added pressure on the healthcare system.

“While these illnesses rise at this time every year, the hospital is currently caring for more critically ill patients than at any time since the COVID-19 pandemic. The flu, COVID-19 and other common respiratory viruses are contributing to most of these cases, and the Ministry of Health and Wellness expects levels to stay high until early February,” the Ministry said in a release.

To help reduce pressure on the hospital, the Ministry is urging the public to seek medical attention early and get vaccinated against influenza. Flu shots are available free at polyclinics and are especially important for people over 65, pregnant women and those living with non-communicable diseases.

People are advised to seek prompt medical attention if they or their children experience difficulty breathing, chest pain, a high fever lasting more than 48 hours, confusion or signs of dehydration. The Ministry also recommends frequent handwashing, covering coughs and sneezes, staying home when sick and considering masks in crowded places, particularly for those in higher-risk groups.

The Ministry said it was working with the QEH to maintain bed availability and prepare additional space for patients. However, people attending the Accident and Emergency Department may face longer waits, as those with the most urgent needs will be seen first.

Some non-urgent surgeries have also been postponed to free up capacity for seriously ill patients.

“Emergency and urgent surgeries are continuing. The Ministry understands how difficult a postponed procedure is for patients and their families, and if the procedure is affected, the hospital will contact you directly,” the Ministry said. (QEH)
