Retired educator Dame Avisene Carrington has passed away. She was 108 years old.
In 2018, Dame Avisene was awarded what was then Barbados’ highest order – Dame of St Andrew – in the Independence Awards, just a few months after she celebrated her 100th birthday on September 17.
She became the first centenarian to hold that honour.
Dame Carrington started teaching at age 19 and retired from the classroom at 90 years when she closed Merrivale Preparatory School. She started the institution from her home with just six children and it became synonymous with excellence in early childhood education.
The widow of former permanent secretary Vere Carrington, is survived by three children and three grand-children. (SAT)
