Govt has eye on ‘unnecessary’ imports

Minister of Agriculture, Food and Nutritional Security Dr Shantal Munro-Knight is putting certain food importers on notice – we are watching.

While addressing the Barbados Agricultural Society’s (BAS) annual general meeting yesterday in the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre, the minister said it annoyed her to see large amounts of pork, sugar and onions continue to come into the island when Barbados could produce enough locally.

“We are having a challenge where we see the agricultural sector is working to increase its production, and we are still having, what I would say, in some respects, unnecessary imports. I want to put the private sector on guard. We are watching,” she said.

The minister said she was especially interested in finding out why so much pork was being imported and had engaged the Ministry of Energy, Business Development and Commerce on the matter.
