Blackman overcomes injury to claim title

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu standout Nia Blackman overcame injury, adversity and a stacked international field to capture the women’s heavyweight title at the 2026 IBJJF European No-Gi Championship in Italy on Sunday, one of the most significant achievements of her career.

Competing in the adult black belt division, the British-born athlete of Barbadian descent secured gold in the 76kg heavyweight category after defeating Finland’s Sara Lehto in the semi-finals before edging Brazil’s Maria Vicentini by referee’s decision in a closely-contested final.

Blackman’s championship run came after an injury scare during the tournament’s open-weight competition, where she had already shown her class against some of the sport’s top competitors.

In a social media post following her triumph, Blackman reflected on an emotional weekend that tested her physically and mentally.

“A weekend with a lot of ups and downs, but one I’ll never forget. I had a great run in the open class but unfortunately picked up an injury in the semi-finals. I wasn’t supposed to go back out there, so making it back for day two, competing in the finals and coming home with gold means more than I can put into words,” she said.

For Blackman, however, the achievement was about far more than individual glory.

She was quick to credit the coaches, teammates, supporters and family members who carried her through the difficult moments of the tournament.

“More than anything, I’m so grateful for the team I have around me. When I got injured, it was their belief, encouragement and support that gave me the confidence to go back out there. I know how lucky I am to have people who pour so much into me, stand by me through the difficult moments and want to see me succeed just as much as I do. This gold reflects the people in my corner just as much as it is the work I’ve put in,” she shared.

She also paid tribute to her parents for remaining by her side throughout her journey.

“For being there through every high and low, picking me up when I’m down, believing in me unconditionally and making sure I never have to do any of this alone. I wouldn’t be where I am without you.”

Having conquered Europe, Blackman made it clear she has no intention of slowing down.

“Been the number one diva in this game for a minute, and we’re not stopping anytime soon. Next stop No-Gi Worlds.”

The 2026 IBJJF World No-Gi Championship is scheduled for December 10 to 12 in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.

Before her heavyweight triumph, Blackman impressed in the open-weight bracket by submitting world-class competitor Salla Simola with a rear-naked choke in the quarterfinals.

She later suffered her only defeat of the tournament when eventual open-weight champion Martyna Kapuscinska secured victory with an Aoki lock in the semifinals. Kapuscinska would go on to claim the division title with a straight ankle lock victory over Injana Goodman in the final.

Despite the injury setback, Blackman returned the following day determined to challenge for heavyweight honours.

On one side of the bracket, Sara Lehto advanced after defeating Brenda Santos via Americana, while Denise Krahn submitted Kerttu Kouki with a triangle choke.

Maria Vicentini then edged Krahn on advantages to earn her place in the final.

Meanwhile, Blackman defeated Lehto in a scoreless semi-final that was decided on advantages before meeting Vicentini for the championship.

In another close contest, Blackman was awarded the decision victory to secure the European crown.

The accomplishment drew high praise from Rollins Alleyne, president of the Barbados Amateur Wrestling Association, who described the result as a landmark moment for Barbadian grappling. “Wow, That’s a big one. She’s doing fantastic. That’s a major win,” Alleyne exclaimed.

He said Blackman’s success has the potential to elevate Barbados’ profile internationally in grappling and combat sports.

“She’s Barbados’ future. She will bring medals for Barbados in United World Wrestling grappling. We’re very happy for her. She’s putting Barbados on the map.”

According to Alleyne, the association hopes Blackman will eventually represent Barbados at major international events once all eligibility matters are completed.

“I hope now that she gets her paperwork from immigration because we need her to represent us next year at the World Championships and the Pan American Games.”

The wrestling administrator also believes Blackman can also play an important role in the development of younger athletes in Barbados, particularly talented teenage beach wrestler Nia Walrond.
