Ministry outlines plans for National Thanksgiving Service

Officials from the Ministry of Labour, Social Security and the Third Sector have outlined plans for the National Thanksgiving Service as Barbados marks 60 years of Independence and five years as a republic.

Speaking at a press briefing at the Warrens Office Complex, St Michael, officials said the service, themed Anchored by Legacy, Sustained by Resilience, would be held on Sunday, November 22, at the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex.

It will begin at 10 a.m., with a pre-service musical programme and a steel orchestra welcoming guests from 9 a.m.

The service will feature hymns, a presentation of the flag, prayer and the ministry of the word, with Reverend Dr Adrian Smith, acting superintendent of the Moravian Church, as preacher.

A National Choir of between 80 and 100 voices will join the National Youth Choir, and an original anthem composed by Roger Gittens will be performed with the combined Police and Defence Force bands, steel bands and strings.

Free Transport Board buses will leave at 8:30 a.m. from several terminals across the island, with return services expected at 11:30 a.m.

Head of Communications Pat Parris encouraged families to attend.

“Bring your children, bring your grandchildren, bring your family, make it a family occasion,” she said. (DDS)
