CHESS is not the typical sport that attracts hundreds of spectators, extensive media coverage or widespread interest. Last weekend, however, the sport had its fair share of the limelight.
The fourth annual CARIFTA Games chess championships, contested at Divi Southwinds Hotel at the same time that track and field and swimming were on elsewhere, was a resounding success on more than one count.
Not only did the four days of competition run smoothly, but Barbados, spearheaded by two of the country’s best players, Orlando Husbands and Yu Tien Poon, emerged champions to maintain the tradition of host teams winning the championships.
Husbands, 18, and Poon, 16, are both FIDE masters earmarked for bright futures and they lived up to their potential en route to winning gold medals in the Under-20 and Under-16 divisions, respectively.
