Kimmara, Nathan lead way for Bajans

It took a nine-year-old to score Barbados’ first win after a string of defeats on the opening day of the Caribbean Regional Badminton Confederation (CAREBACO) Junior Championships at the Wildey Gymnasium yesterday.

After a one-day delay in the start of the tournament because of the passage of Tropical Storm Dorian on Monday, Barbados lost eight matches before Hindsbury student Kimmara Tull-Williams registered the first win for the hosts on a day in which 60 matches were played.

The talented player, of Adams Close, Silver Hill, Christ Church, gave the Bajan fans something to cheer for as she defeated Rishelle Broodoosingh, of Trinidad and Tobago, 21-13, 21-11 in the Under-11 division.

Pint-sized Nathan King, the grandson of local basketball legend George Shepherd, and former Barbados netballer and darts player Maureen Shepherd, continued the celebrations with a 21-13, 21-16 dismissal of Aditya Maharaj, of Trinidad and Tobago. (KB)
