POLICE have uncovered an apparent scam in which individuals with criminal histories were reportedly paying between $800 and $900 to obtain certificates indicating they had clean records.
The SUNDAY SUN understands that two police officers were being questioned in the matter.
The illegal activity was apparently discovered when a police officer attached to the Certificate of Character Office on Roebuck Street came across a certificate for a known criminal and realised that it did not contain any of the many convictions which the man had accumulated.
Internal investigations subsequently revealed that there were a number of persons with criminal records who had obtained certificates indicating that they had no convictions.
