Shane Brathwaite fittingly climaxed a half-century of Barbados’ forays at the Pan Am Games with a gold in the men’s 110 hurdles in Lima, Peru.
Greggmar Swift barely missed out on taking a bronze in that event, where Barbados earned their first Pan Am gold. But did that erase the paltry returns from 33 athletes taking part in 12 disciplines over almost three weeks at what could be termed the “Pan Am Winter Games”?
As customary, the track competitors brought the greatest cheer to Barbados with the playing of the National Anthem and the raising of the Flag, erasing the coldness of the night and prior near misses in the National Stadium.
Sade Sealy had copped a fourth in the women’s 800 metres final while chalking up a new national record. Surprisingly, the lion-hearted Sonia Gaskin finished at the back of the field in that final. (KB)
