Worried over Ebola readiness

THE PAN AMERICAN Health Organisation (PAHO) might be impressed, but former HIV/AIDS czar Carol Lady Haynes has some worries about Barbados’ readiness to handle a case of the dreaded Ebola virus.

One worry is that if Barbados does not get the right system in place a single suspected case of Ebola might lead to the temporary shutdown of clinics and doctors’ offices where the initial help was sought.

The high cost of protective wear for front-line workers who have to deal with suspected Ebola cases and the unavailability of some equipment were also listed as concerns when Lady Haynes addressed the Senate yesterday.

She told senators that after attending one of the Ebola familiarisation sessions put on by the authorities, she contacted a few agents in Bridgetown who would have provided the protective gear. (TY)
