Cyclist Amber Joseph put on a excellent display of tactics and stamina to be within touching distance of a medal in the women’s omnium at the 18th Pan Am Games yesterday morning.
A superb fourth placing in the scratch race, followed by sixth in the gruelling tempo race, earned Joseph 64 points and fourth place overall going into last night’s elimination and points race. Joseph was four points behind Mexico Lizbeth Vazquez-Salazar.
Leading the charge for gold was the United States’ Jennifer Valente on 76 and Chile’s Aranza Sanchez-Villalon, who won the scratch, on 74.
Valente, Vazquez-Salazar and Lina Hernandez-Gomez smashed the field in the tempo, lapping everyone and picking up intimidating points in the 30 laps of the circuit. (KB)
