DO NOT MISTAKE my silence for an incapacity to speak!
That warning was flashed yesterday by Prime Minister Freundel Stuart to critics of his reticence in engaging the people on national issues, and in particular, on the controversial CLICO, at the heart of which is his personal friend, former company boss Leroy Parris.
Speaking during debate in the House of Assembly on the 2015-2016 Estimates, Stuart reminded the chamber of his 31 years as a lawyer and said he recognised the matter was before the courts and was under judicial management.
“I’ve kept my voice out of that because I think that the courts should be allowed to get on with their business,” he said, noting also the sub judice rule of the Standing Orders.
“The point has to be made, and I have said it over and over again, I have as vested an interest in the solution of the CLICO problem as anybody else in Barbados,” he added. “I have had a life policy with CLICO since 1985 and I have a Flexible Premium Annuity [FPA] with CLICO since about 1988 . . . .” (AB)
