Mia: Over $480m owed by Govt

BARBADIANS ARE NOT being given a clear picture of the amount of money Government owes individuals and businesses here and overseas.

Opposition Leader Mia Mottley has rejected the $250 million she said Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler listed as Government’s arrears to various groups.

She said Government actually owed more than $480 million, a sum that did not include the costs it would have meet to fix CLICO.estimates-2015

Leading off the Opposition’s reply in the Estimates Debate, Mottley said the National Insurance Scheme was owed $180 million in contributions from the reimbursement of non-contributory pensions “that the Ministry of Finance would normally carry as a cost”.

She said Government also owed the Williams Industries group $40 million, and still had to pay the University of the West Indies $150 million in arrears. (SC)
